The reformation and the start of
church denominations

The truth is still the truth, even if no one believes it. A lie is still a lie even if everyone believes it and just because you cannot see something does not mean that it is not there

The reformation was a pivotal movement in the 16th century that fundamentally transformed how people perceived the teachings of the Messiah. It was sparked by Martin Luther, whose 95 Thesis criticised the practices of the catholic church, particularly for the sale of indulgences. Luther called for a return to biblical foundations and emphasised salvation through faith rather than reliance on institutional control, sacraments, or financial transactions.

Following the establishment of the early assembly after the Messiah’s sacrifice, s-a-t-a-n sought to oppose the development of belief and knowledge of the Father Salvation Plan through institutional religion. The catholic church became the system that moved people away from the Father and the Messiah through centuries of persecution, coercion, extortion, abuse, torture, and the violent suppression of believers. Yet the suffering of martyrs often strengthened faith rather than destroyed it, as their witness caused others to seek truth more deeply.

At some point, it became clear that force alone could not permanently turn people away from the Father and the Messiah. S-a-t-a-n determined that widely accepted deception would be more effective than the use of force. Rather than compulsion through violence, division through doctrine would be a far more subtle and enduring form of separation.

The reformation emerged in this context. While it challenged the corruption of the catholic church, it also fragmented belief into a multitude of denominations, doctrines, and interpretations, allowing people to “shop” for the deal that suited them best. 2 Timothy 4:3 talks exactly about this “3 For there shall be a time when they shall not bear sound teaching, but according to their own desires, they shall heap up for themselves teachers tickling the ear 4 and they shall indeed turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to myths”, and Romans 16:18 For such ones do not serve our Master Yahusha Messiah, but their own stomach, and by smooth words and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent”.

Although reform was necessary, it increased endless confusion, doctrinal division and separation from the Messiah. It caused people to align themselves with teachings that best suited their own preferences, culture, upbringing, or social environment.

Instead of torture and force, people became bound by doctrine which was influenced by demonic activity. Small but calculated departures that can have a marked effect on peoples spiritual journey. This includes channels that include education, culture, tradition, social pressure, scriptural mis-interpretation, religious identity, and pagan practices. This has proven to be a highly effective methodology, given the vast number of denominations and conflicting teachings that now exist, all claiming sole authority from the same Scriptures.

This reflects the warning given by Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1: “But the Spirit distinctly says that in latter times some shall fall away from the belief, paying attention to misleading spirits, and teachings of demons…”

Several observations arise from this:

  • Many doctrines have developed non-scriptural elements such as the rapture, the trinity, false prophets and prophecy, keeping pagan and demonic festivals, tithing, praying to saints, and other practices that are not explicitly supported by Scripture. These are often traditions and interpretations of men rather than direct instruction from the Father, similar to what the Pharisees imposed on Israel, similar to what the Pharisees imposed on Israel, as described in Mark 7:6 6 And He answering, said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it has been written, ‘This people respect Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men”

  • Some doctrines operate as thinly disguised businesses, where financial obligations are placed upon members to sustain the institution rather than the work of faith. The Messiah Himself cleansed the Temple in Jerusalem because worship had been corrupted by commercial exploitation, showing strong opposition to turning faith into a financial enterprise

  • All doctrines are derived from the same Scriptures, yet they differ significantly in belief, practice, and interpretation. This demonstrates how tradition, leadership, and institutional structure can shape belief as much as Scripture itself.

  • Most doctrines teach that the Messiah’s sacrifice nullified the Torah; however, the Messiah fulfilled the sacrificial requirements and the Spring Feasts, while the Autumn Feasts remain prophetically unfulfilled and point to future events in the Father’s salvation plan

  • The Messiah explicitly stated in Matthew 5:17–19 that “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to complete. 18 “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one yod or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done. 19 “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.”

Consequently, many doctrines operate through diversion rather than open opposition, incorporating variations of the following:

  • Ignoring or minimising the instructions given in the Torah, despite the Messiah’s direct teaching that He did not come to abolish the Law

  • Failing to recognise the Feasts of the Father, which set out the Father’s salvation plan for mankind and prophetically reveal both fulfilled and future events

  • Neglecting or selectively applying the Ten Commandments and broader covenant instructions while claiming obedience through doctrine alone

  • Replacing biblical appointed times with later traditions that have origins in pagan practices, magic, witchcraft or forms of blended worship rather than Scripture

  • Creating a veil over people’s understanding by requiring agreement with denominational doctrine as a condition of acceptance, fellowship, or even salvation, rather than encouraging direct testing of all things against Scripture

  • Claiming exclusive access to the Father and the Messiah by positioning a particular denomination, church, or doctrinal system as the only valid path to truth and salvation

We now have widely accepted deception, using diversionary techniques, where well meaning individuals are controlled and prevented for exploring a understanding the Truth . The Messiah argued against the pharisees for this reason in Matthew 23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for you do not go in, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.”

The challenge for every believer is therefore not loyalty to denomination, but faithfulness to the Word as it is written.
